Eat Well/Move Well Week 5: Fitness Tracking

By TCAW Intern/Guest Blogger Michael Freeland

The Take Charge/Age Well AcademySM is always looking for ways to enhance the experience of our participants and provide them with the best tools and resources available.

Week 5 of the Eat Well/Move Well course gave participants an overview of two fitness resources, My Fitness Pal and NIH’s Go4Life. Both online resources piqued the interest of our Eat Well/Move Well participants, curious not only about the benefits of using activity and food tracking tools, but about the dangers involved in committing to an active lifestyle, asking questions like, “What exactly happens when you pull a muscle?”

Here is a little bit about the two tracking tools:

Go4Life

Go4Life

Go4Life

Go4Life is a physical activity campaign designed to help participants fit exercise into their daily routines. Resources include exercises, motivational tips, and other tools for beginning the process of being and staying active.

Go4Life is tailored to match the needs of older adults (Baby boomers and their parents), focusing on four areas: strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility.
With September deemed Go4Life month, take a look at Go4Life and see if it might be the right fit for your fitness needs.

My Fitness Pal

My Fitness Pal is a fitness and nutrition program accessed by computer, laptop, tablet or smart phone. The program allows the user to track her daily food and drink consumption along with exercise.

My Fitness Pal

My Fitness Pal Interface

My Fitness Pal contains a database of over one million different food items with nutritional content that allows the user to easily input her daily meals and snacks. Automatically, the tracker subtracts calories burned from exercise from calories consumed, once the activity is logged. This function enables the user to keep track of weight loss, maintenance, or gain goals, all the while keeping track of daily fitness and food consumption. My Fitness Pal also sends the user motivational tips and recipes to help with the mission to lead a healthy lifestyle.
